As many of you who read this blog know, I love cats, big or small.  I’m, er, very fond of my house cat.  And of course I adore Florida panthers.

There are only a few of those left in Florida, now.  Hunted down, poisoned, and killed or maimed by cars…. .

I was browsing through the Encyclopedia of Life, and came across this.  What a depressing picture.  Apparently this cat lives down in Weston.

Sad to say, cases exist where endangered species are exhibited at roadside attraction zoos, malls and county fairs in Florida.

Some of these exhibitors are pretty ruthless — wrenching lion cubs away from their mothers, for example, just to make a cheap buck.   Every year I find myself signing petitions to stop this sort of reckless activity.

I’m definitely going to revisit the Busch Wildlife Sanctuary, which is nearby, to see Wizard, Dakota, and the other panthers there that were confiscated and acquired by the refuge as a result of illegal panther ownership.

I also might take a trip to see Mirasol at the Palm Beach Zoo, when she’s out of quarantine.
